Looking for difficult games with great gameplay that are rewarding to become better at

Main Post:

I'm nearly finished with Doom Eternal on nightmare difficulty, and I previously beat Elden Ring and its DLC. I'm a not a naturally gifted gamer but I realized I enjoy mastering difficult and interesting combat loops. I'm really open to any game of any genre, although having just played Doom Eternal, a slight preference towards shooters. I should mention I prefer killing non human stuff over humans, but if the game's good enough anything goes.

I'm considering:

  • Returnal - heard it's difficult, but many love it and the art looks great
  • Titanfall 2 - looks to have great movement and fun gameplay
  • Doom Eternal DLC - I will get this when it's on sale
  • Sekiro - Probably not this. A ton has been said about this game. I don't know if I'm ready for another Fromsoft journey yet.

But completely open to any other game that fits this idea. I also have enjoyed Ultrakill, and am open to platformers/2D and the like, but I'd prefer not to to play a pixel game.

Games I have NOT liked are mostly anything that feels more scripted, with lengthy cut-scenes and less focus on gameplay. I also want my time to be respected - no superfluous grinding. Cyberpunk 2077, for example, I felt was too scripted for me (I might be wrong about this one, I did not enjoy the first few hours).

Top Comment: Metal: Hellsinger Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate/World/Rise/Wilds (Gen U is on switch if you have, Wilds is releasing on friday) Dynasty Warriors Origins on Hero difficulty (Honestly the gameplay is tight, I hate to say it but you could skip the cutscenes and you wouldn't be missing much) Helldivers 2 (Takes a bit to get to the hardest difficulty but it sure does kick your ass) Warhammer Vermintide 2 (same as above) Left 4 Dead 2 (if you haven't already, play it on realism) Earth Defense Force 5 Metal Gear Rising Revengeance Some of these have you fighting humans and others don't but these should mostly fit what you're looking for I hope. Let me know what you think!

Hardest game you’ve played?

Main Post:

Hello everyone. I'm looking into how different games manage difficulty, and I would like some more input outside of just my own experience. What I'm looking for is the hardest experience you've ever endured, something that truly pushed you past what you thought you could do and left you a better person for it. As of right now, I only have one of those games on my list. I'd appreciate any input though, just leave some explanation as to what makes the game hard and how enjoyable it is.

Here's games I've already completed:

  • Celeste
  • Cuphead
  • Dark Souls series
  • Rage games (Jump King, IWBTG, Getting Over It, Pogostuck)
  • Shoot 'em ups (Touhou series, Mushihimesama)

Thank you!

Top Comment: Sekiro. But boy was it fun.

Looking for some games that are hard but in a fair way.

Main Post:

I'm struggling with the fact that most of the games I play are either super easy, and thus boring, or hard in completely unfair ways that make it incredibly unfun.(Ex. Elden ring has the enemies read player inputs to make it harder, which is super not fun.) Some of the games I like (or liked in the past but are too easy now) are Hades, Guacamelee(1+2), Hollow knight, Skyrim, All the Hitman games, inscryption, Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, Persona 5(Royal, Strikers, and tactica), West of Loathing, Terraria, GOW, DBZ Kakarot. I also like some story based games like Firewatch and the Phoenix Wright series. Thanks!

Top Comment: Dark Souls 1 has no Input Trigger.. one of my favorites.. but i also liek elden ring so.. How about Fallout 4 f.e.? You can set the difficulty how u want during playing or even a survival mode

What are some good challenging games that aren’t dark souls?

Main Post:

So I enjoyed games like sekiro, elden ring, and dark souls and want games that give me that same high from overcoming a situation. It doesn’t have to be combat based but anything from survival to horror games.

Top Comment: Hollowknight. Those pantheons are still on my eventually do list.
